The difficult history of our people is replete with stories of adversity followed by redemption and success. Join us to learn more about the struggles of our Sephardic and Mizrahi family, struggles of which more of the Ashkenazi world should know.
Joseph Samuels was born in the Jewish quarter of the old city of Baghdad in December 1930. In 1941, at the age of 10, Joe survived the Farhud, a Pogrom carried out by Muslim mobs against the Jewish citizens. Fearing for his life from the open anti-Semitism and violent persecution of Jews in Iraq after the failed war to eliminate Israel in 1948, he fled to Iran and then to Israel, where he became a homeless penniless refugee.
